Rail Service Delivery

Northern Manitoba covers a vast geographical area.  Many of the communities in north central Manitoba are accessible only by rail several months of the year.  Many challenges are faced by the communities as the rail line is currently in the midst of a major maintenance project and service providers are challenged with permafrost each spring/summer.

Community Futures North Central Development acts as a liasion between the communities in the region and VIA Rail Canada (who operate the passenger trains) and Omnitrax Canada (who own and maintain the rail line).

The most recent meetings regarding train service were held on June 23rd, 2014 (Thompson) and July 28th (Churchill).  A number of actions came out of these meeting in which CFNCD along with the communities and service providers are working towards meeting.

VIA operates a 1-800 number that residents and visitors can call to get status of trains 693 and 692.  The number is 1-888-842-6348.
